Hyphenated or Unhyphenated Domain Name?

Choosing a Domain Name: Part 2

There are various other reasons why some people opted to using a hyphen or hyphens as part of their domain name. In my case, I just want my domain name to be more readable, while the others take advantage of the keywords mania which in some cases lead to a sort of abuse and intentional spamming purposes. This is particularly true on hyphenated long domain names that use more than 3 hyphens to separate the words. Other people considers search engine functionality as one of the reasons for using a domain name with hyphen, that is, believing that search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN and the like can give them better ranking in the search results, since it was said before that domain names with a hyphen are more readable to search engines. But according to some experts, that is not the case anymore.

In these days of fast changing internet technology, the search engines have becoming more and more sophisticated that the issue on keyword or keyphrase readability capacity on both hyphenated and unhyphenated domain names can actually be discarded.

In the article "The Truth About Hyphenated Domain" posted by Mr. Alan Burns, the webmaster at Name Search Domain, he mentioned that while it's still true that using hyphenated domain names make search engines read them with more ease but in general it will not benefit in the search engine results ranking. There's no doubt that I agree with him on this. When you try to look up for a keyword, say through Google, you'll notice that the top ranking sites in the search results are not usually the ones with hyphenated domain names. How search engines rank the sites is another matter.

There's quite a lot of differing opinions on whether or not to use a hyphen, but as to what I've read from several blogs and forums so far, the more experienced internet enterpreneurs still recommend a domain name without the hyphen as much as possible.
